The problem for travellers with using your phone as a credit card

HARD CASH

Like many, I store my credit card on my phone. When I was checking into a Sydney hotel recently, I wasn’t able to tap my phone for the required pre-authorisation fee. Luckily, my partner had a physical credit card on him. If I was travelling alone, I’d have had to provide a $100 deposit. But I don’t carry cash and without a physical card I can’t draw dollars from an ATM. Carrying a physical card defeats the object of storing my card on my phone.

LETTER OF THE WEEK

HAVANA SENT

Craig Tansley’s story (Traveller, December 15) brought back memories of our eight-day trip to Cuba in 2019. Rather than fly via the US or Canada, we flew via Madrid on Iberia Airlines (a flight of about 10 hours). There were few tourists in Cuba due to the US embargo, so getting around was easy. We felt safe and in Havana you can walk easily as most streets are closed to traffic. We had four nights in Havana staying at the Conde De Villanueva, a converted colonial house. We did a half-day walking tour of the old town, an architectural drive in a vintage convertible. The sound of music is everywhere – in doorways, on the street, in the plazas and bars (the best bargain was the $US10 barbecued lobster tails and a mojito). Go now.

Mountain Gear’s gift to Spokane is the Banff Film Festival

Many shops closed their doors permanently in 2020. However, Mountain Gear, the late, lamented Spokane outfitter, which sold outdoor products such as tents and kayaks, opted to shut down in January 2020, before the pandemic, after a healthy 37-year run .

“It was just our time to close,” Mountain Gear owner Paul Fish said. “It all happened right before the whole world went to hell.”

However, the store still lives on through the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which returns Friday to the Bing Crosby Theater.

Fish isn’t sure of the first year he booked the Banff Festival for Spokane but he recalls why he was attracted to the outdoor adventure films.

“It was about marketing for Mountain Gear,” Fish said . “Instead of paying advertising to market the store, I brought in the films so people paid us. It made so much sense and it became this amazing tradition that has outlived the store. We’ve been doing the festival for more than 30 years and people love it and I get it. The films are fun.”

Part of the appeal is that many of the activities screened are possible for average adventurists.

“What you see in these films can actually be done by the regular person,” Fish said. “It’s not like the Warren Miller films in which you watch those movies and you think, ‘Wow, if I try that, I’m going to die!’ When I watch those films, I watch people ski off a cliff, which I’ll never do. However, I remember watching one of the Banff films about paragliding and I learned how to paraglide. I have seen mountain climbing films and I’m no Tommy Cannon but I can climb like these people. Hopefully those who come out for the film will be as inspired as I’ve been.”

Multi-Day Luxury Tours Bubble Set for China Boost

Travelers are hungry for high-end experiences, and there appears to be no sign of the luxury bubble bursting anytime soon, with China still expected to add weight to the post-pandemic revenge travel surge.

Luxury multi-day tour operators are surprised, and to a certain extent, overwhelmed by the continued wave of pent-up demand. Just this week, group travel for Chinese outbound travelers was approved for certain destinations from February 6.

Joss Kent, CEO of AndBeyond, said the luxury travel company, well-known for its personalized safari offerings, “can barely keep up.”

Since last February, “bookings have been 30 to 35 percent above pre-pandemic 2019 levels. We’ve just had our best first week in January in the history of the company,” Kent claimed.

“All of the growth we’ve seen in the luxury segment is without China. Australia’s only six months old. Asia’s also only just come online and the demand is surprising,” he added. Chinese tourists took 150 million trips overseas in 2019, while spending $255 billion.

Although Chinese travelers are only a small portion of the overall percentage of AndBeyond’s business, Kent said the segment is expected to “grow quite fast.”

No Leveling Out for Luxury as Yet

Beth Sherer, Abercrombie & Kent (A&K) director of product development and operations, also expected to see a leveling out of the strong resurgence in luxury travel.

But this has not been the case.

Guests have been planning ahead for bigger and more rewarding trips to celebrate missed and future milestones, often including extended family, she said. The company has since seen a 12 percent increase in group sizes and a 26 percent increase in future bookings that include five or more guests, as compared to 2019.

“We are hearing from our guests that the pandemic has caused a greater shift in thinking about

Gigi Hadid Shares Rare Pics of Her Daughter Khai Enjoying the Beach
celebrity sightings in new york city january 17 2023

Gigi Hadid Shares Pics of Her Daughter Khai Raymond Hall – Getty Images

On Friday, January 20, Gigi Hadid shared a rare photo of her daughter Khai while on a beautiful beach vacation together. In the pics, the super model is wearing a red string bikini under floral board shorts in blue and red, with the waist band rolled up around her hips. In the first photo, she has written “Mama Hearts Khai” in the sand and is kneeling next to the words and admiring her work.

In the second black-and-white photo, Hadid’s back can be seen and she is carrying Khai on her shoulders. In the third photo, only Khai’s arm and shadow is visible as her smiling mom follows her up from the waves.

“Celebrated the new year w a lil r&r,” Hadid captioned the carousel on Instagram.

Hadid shares her two-year-old daughter with former partner Zayn Malik, and the whole family respects their rules about not sharing Khai’s face on the Internet. In a previous Instagram Story, Hadid wrote, “Our wish is that she can choose how to share herself with the world when she comes of age, and that she can live as normal of a childhood as possible, without worrying about a public image that she has not chosen.”

Fans mostly only get these little glimpses of Khai growing up, and what Hadid says about her in interviews. While discussing motherhood with Willie Geist on gigihadid-talks-modeling-motherhood-and-move-to-fashion-design-148178501882″ data-ylk=”slk:Sunday Today” class=”link “Sunday Today, Hadid gushed about her daughter’s rapid development.

“I think she’s a genius,” she said. “But I think that’s what everyone says about their kid. It’s so much fun. The more that she talks, and understands, and remembers, it just gets more and more fun. And she’s a blessing.”

Winds calm down Tuesday; next system tracks in Wednesday
  • Mountain snow showers and windy for Monday
  • Warming up Tuesday (upper 40s and 50s)
  • Another chance of cold rain and wintry mix on Wednesday

MONDAY & TUESDAY

Aside from some leftover flurries blowing over the mountains, all of us remain blustery to start off the workweek. Wind gusts will reach 20-30mph allowing us to stay chilly throughout the day. Afternoon highs will read in the 40s to low 50s, but wind chill values will be in the 30s.

Tonight we remain breezy with mostly dry conditions. Temperatures will drop into the 20s and low 30s under a partly cloudy sky.

By Tuesday, winds settle with a mix of clouds and sun. Highs will be warmer in the mid-upper 40s and low 50s. Clouds will start to stretch into the area all out in front of our next system.

WEDNESDAY

Yet another soaking system from the south arrives early Wednesday morning delivering rain and a mountain wintry mix. This one looks almost identical to the others we have seen this winter where most areas get a cold rain. Any wintry weather should remain confined to the higher elevations. Right now it is slightly too early to tell how ice totals are looking, but most models are hinting at a glaze of accumulation along the ridgeline and pointing north. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Another storm brings a chilly rain for most with a wintry mix in the mountains.

END OF THE WEEK

Winds will turn strong behind the mid-week system, gusting 20-35 mph. This will also keep the chilly air hanging around through the end of the week, but we will be dry.

Temperatures moderate some by the weekend with highs in

Tips For Maintaining Flawless Skin While Traveling This Winter

Everyone knows your skin undergoes some changes when the seasons switch up. That transition from summer to the cold months can be brutal for some folks. Dead and dry skin sets in like the plague, dermatologists are suddenly everyone’s best friend, and we’re all looking for a good moisturizer.

No matter if you have dry or oily skin (or a combination of both), it’s important that you take care of your skin during the winter months. When you’re traveling and going into different climates, you want to ensure you’re keeping your skin in the best health. Beauty expert and traveler Morgan Owens shared her top tips for maintaining flawless skin while traveling this winter.

Hydration Is Key

Flawless Skin While Traveling

With winter here, a lot of the moisture is being sucked out of the air. If you live in a cold region, many people start spending more time indoors where artificial heat dries out the skin.

Owens says hydration is key when traveling in the wintertime to ensure you don’t damage your skin. The best thing you can do for your skin is to get a good moisturizer and cleanser. During the winter to combat dry skin, Owens suggests a gel-based cleanser. However, go with what works best for your skin type.

“Make sure you seek the best products for yourself when traveling,” Owens said.

Although most people think of external products when hydrating the skin, Owens says it is also important to hydrate your body from the inside out. This includes drinking plenty of water during the cold months.

Exfoliate Often

Because of the drop in humidity levels, cold air and heat can cause skin cells to die faster resulting in dry and dead skin. Nothing is worse than traveling and experiencing uncomfortable dry

Are resort fees ever worth it?

The Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, a Hyatt resort on 15 beachfront acres in Hawaii, is far from a place to sleep. There are multiple pools, including a lagoon and three infinity pools. As part of the resort fee, you can also take a stand-up paddleboarding course, use the resort’s snorkel equipment and GoPro action camera and maybe even learn ukulele, hula or mixology.

It’s all marketed as complimentary — but it’s only sort of so. Andaz Maui is one of what the American Hotel and Lodging Association estimates is 6% of all hotels that charge a resort fee. These fees run between $20 and $50 per night — and they’ve become one of the most controversial issues in the travel industry.

NerdWallet analyzed more than 100 U.S. hotels with January 2023 check-in dates as part of its 2023 Best-Of Awards to see which hotels have the best and worst fees. Among the hotels that charge them, the average resort fee was $42.41, representing nearly 11% of the overall nightly cost. The Andaz Maui’s daily resort fee is $50 plus tax, which is above average. But because Andaz Maui’s nightly rates are also above average, the fee is about 6% of the overall nightly cost to stay in January 2023, based on data gathered in December 2022.

And like most other resorts that charge such fees, the Andaz’s fee is not optional — even if you never use the amenities.

The case for resort fees

Resort fees may be a way for hotels to increase profits without necessarily charging guests more.

“Hotels claim that resort fees allow hotels to reduce the commissions paid to online travel agents,” according to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2017 report.

Create a cozy Southwest-inspired atmosphere in your bedroom. Start by painting the walls a rich cactus green, then add earth-tone accents. Finish off the motif with a patterned blanket, throw pillow, and area rug.

Preppy Green Accents

Lush and Luxurious

A few statement pieces can make a big impact a room with minimal effort. A four poster canopy bed is a statement on its own, but the sky-high green velour curtains are the real focal point of the space. Natural materials such as bamboo and jute create an earthy energy while a vintage bedside table adds a bit of
